There’s always a flurry of activity that often goes unseen.
I took on the role of admin when dad’s injury first happened and that’s remained with me ever since.
I’m often asked what I need to do. Well, every week is different!
This past week included chasing wheelchair maintenance, updating staff rota’s, authorising annual leave & managing sickness. On top of that, there was the daily tasks list for the PA’s, ensuring dads equipment and medical supplies were packed for his next break away, re ordering supplies & medication & updating moving & handling plans and risk assessments for his break.
Working full time & managing home life (dad’s care) can be challenging. Time management is so important! Managing tasks on the go. A five minute wait for a meeting or the dinner to finish; I make these ‘spare’ moments work.
It also helps that I work for a Firm who have a flexible working policy.
Why? He’s my dad and I know he would do it for me!
Doing it all myself, there’s only me to blame when things don’t go to plan!
Top tips:
If you work, talk to your boss and explain your responsibilities. It can work. Find a healthy balance.
Don’t put up with “no”. Health care providers will mostly say no to requests! Keep at them until you have what you or your loved one needs.
Plan ahead. Have an emergency plan for times you’re not around. A plan that someone else can pick up and understand. We have an emergency tin – two days worth of medication all in its original boxes with his care plan. Great for hospital emergency admissions.
Take time out. Have days to yourself, take a holiday; just plan and ensure those filling your shoes know how to get help.
